TonyMoly Floria | Buying Time (for Our Skin)

Mention stem cell research or stem cell technology, some people will probably start going preachy and bring up topics like pro-life, pro-choice, or whatever.

Yea, one would be forgiven to think that ‘stem cell‘ are dirty words or something. I guess while there’s no denying the potential power of the knowledge, research and advancements of stem cells, there ARE issues relating to ethics, moral standards and what constitutes appropriate laws and behaviour that have largely been unanswered.

I’d hazard a guess that most of us would have heard of the term ‘stem cell‘ and would probably know that human beings have these things. And oh, we probably do know that some smarties are looking into stem cell technology to look for cures for diseases or something. But beyond that, unless you’re a Science student, you may not know what we’re talking about exactly.

Stem cells are the basis of life and renewal too. In fact, it’s been said that the earliest form of life on earth were mere stem cells, with perhaps no form. Simply put, human stem cells are what regenerate tissue and replenish dying skin cells. They also have the function to repair and protect us from the damages incurred by our skin.

Now as we all know, there are different types of cells in our bodies, including blood cells, brain cells, tissue, muscle, etc. These are all ‘specialized cells’ whereas stem cells are generally dormant in the deepest layer of our epidermis (that’s the outermost layer of our skin), but these stem cells will spring to action to replenish the skin as it undergoes natural homeostatis and wound repair.

However, these regenerative stem cells will eventually become more vulnerable due to our normal aging process and over-exposure to the sun, free radicals and other harmful elements in the environment. This lack of regeneration causes our skin to slowly lose its built-in self-healing mechanism.

This is why as we age, we have fewer cells that can treat and heal our skin and then the visible signs of aging start to appear. And this is also what I’m going to talk about in this blog post; yup, I’m only skin-deep and will talk about beauty, instead of examining the moral issues surrounding human stem cell research.

But it is a fact that stem cell research is an important aspect of medical science and it harbours alot of potential and hope to find cures to illness such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s disease and even cancer. So it doesn’t hurt if you were to understand more about it. So click HERE to read the basics of stem cell and then click HERE to a rather well-written article on the morality of the case.

Now other than exploring how stem cells can be differentiated to become blood cells to cure cancer, or to become brain cells to cure Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, since one of its key functions is skin restoration and healing, surely there are beauty aspects to it, ya?

But in most countries, it is frowned upon, if not illegal, to use human stem cells for cosmetic purposes. This has propelled many beauty companies to turn to plant stem cells!

Anti-aging products are HUGE…. women (and men too!) are very very willing to spend indecent amount of money in the pursuit of youth. Many would happily part with an arm and a leg (figuratively, of course!) to turn back the aging clock and stay younger.

And every few years, we will see some new ingredient or technology creating some sort of crazed fad that instills such hope into everyone. There were antioxidants to help stop the destruction of the skin cells by those free radicals. And then there were those glycolic-based products which fueled skin elasticity and firmness. Assuming that these things work, at best they would only prevent further damage or slow down the aging process; hardly any one of these have ‘restorative’ ability.

But now, enters the hottest ingredient on the scene, the plant stem cells! Ahhh, this one jinjja give us all more hope…

If they work, these are actives that will actually awaken the rest of the existing stem cells that we have, divide them possibly and repair our skin! Technically, improvements to skin condition should work (provided the products have some delivery system to ensure that the plant stem cells can penetrate the deeper layers of our skin, but that’s another story… on molecular size, keke!)

Now what on earth is plant stem cell technology, you wonder.

In a nutshell, plant stem cell technology is a relatively new technology that enables the production of plant stem cells on a commercial scale for use in beauty products or skincare applications and treatments.

We’ve already said earlier that skin stem cells are directly responsible for the youthfulness of our skin, so plant stem cell technology aims to stimulate human stem cell growth; protect stem cells due to ultraviolet (over)exposure and to neutralize the aging effects on our skin. Yup, I’m talking about reducing lines and diminishing wrinkles significantly here.

Heard of MARY SCHOOK? She’s the beauty guru who’s like the royal consultant to most international beauty brands and magazines. She refers to herself as a Beauty Engineer, amongst many other titles. But one most intriguing one is she’s also a stem cell researcher!

Now Mary is a rather big fan of Korean beauty technology and products. Did you know that she’s the one who brought the Korean-style fake eyelashes to the US and blazed a trail of fluttering eyes…? In a RECENT INTERVIEW WITH MARIE CLAIRE, she confessed that some 90% of her beauty products are Korean-made! She went on to say she thinks that the Korean beauty industry is some 12 years ahead of its American and European counterparts!

Mary also flagged stem cell research in Korea as something remarkable and something to watch out for. (Incidentally, you can read more about stem cell research for anti-aging skincare HERE.)

She’s right. Since about a couple of years of and even more so in the past year, practically every Korean beauty brand that’s worth its salt has launched a range (not just a single product, mind you!) of stem cell products. Some turn to botanicals and some turn to deep sea marine life. Either way, stem cell technology in beauty is one of the leading trends now in Korea.

Personally, I can’t see where this application of plant stem cells into beauty products could go wrong.

After all, we already know that some botanical extracts have strong antioxidant properties that will help fight the free radicals and minimizing the damage brought about by photo-aging, etc. The antioxidants, coupled with the potential goodness of plant stem cell technology… results can only get better, right? Besides, the more natural and organic our skincare products are, the better.
